Labor account book, 1869-1872.

This manuscript records the hours of labor for several employees working for a school furnishings and scientific apparatus manufacturer of Newark, NJ from 1869-1872. Entries are organized by name, and information about date, type of labor performed, and hours worked are recorded. Particulars about the type of work done and the amount of time expended are quite detailed, revealing that the company manufactured mostly desks and "settees" of various sizes and styles, chairs, blackboard frames, inkwells, tellurians, condensers, bell chimes, and gyroscopes. Mentioned are the names of several schools in the Newark area, including Jersey City, Ashland, and Orange High School. The name William Griffin appears with a Newark, NJ address on the inside of the rear cover. Entries in period Newark city directories list William Griffin as a japanner, but working from a different address.
